Motorcycle Tips: How to Improve Your Motorcycle Skills

Becoming an experienced motorcycle rider is not an easy task. It takes years to learn motorbike riding skills. Even those with years of experience are working every day to improve their skills.

In saying that, here are a few tips for bike riders to improve their riding skills:

  1. Maintain a distance from the vehicle ahead: In case of heavy traffic, it is very challenging to ride your motorbike while maintaining a required gap from other vehicles. The closer you linger, the less time you will have to react. In a car, you may have an estimation of the car’s length but on a bike, you have a better time estimation. Simply stay 2 seconds behind from the vehicle in front of you to give yourself enough time to react accordingly - changing speed, changing direction etc.

  2. Apply brakes when required: This is one of the most important motorcycle riding skills shared by experts. Many riders apply brakes rapidly when they want to reduce their speed. This can have serious effects on traction. Undoubtedly, applying brakes hardly is obvious, when it is a sudden reaction, but try to avoid this. Practice applying brakes smoothly and softly.  Similarly, when the brakes are released, it should be rolled out softly. This will make your riding experience more comfortable. You will feel better control over your bike and you will find it easier to manage.
  3. Adjust your speed smartly while entering into another lane:  When it comes to entering into the corner way, we keep our speed high and make adjustments to stay in line. But the reality is if you enter slowly in the corner lane, you will get out of it quickly. So, make sure that your bike is under your control and have the right speed when you enter in so that you can exit at a faster speed.
  4. Cover your brakes at defenseless spots: There are some dangerous points on the roads where you need to be extra careful. Follow this tip to improve your motorcycle riding skills. You must follow the traffic rules if you want to protect yourself. Truck drivers can easily say that they didn’t see you or your motorcycle when you were hit (and maybe they didn't). At all times, ride slowly and keep your brakes covered at such intersections. As a result, you will be able to protect yourself from fast-moving vehicles on the road. Try riding a motorcycle by covering your brakes at intersecting points.and always get ready for the unexpected.

  5. Adjust your speed to safely get space: Slow speed is not always a good option for safe riding. Sometimes, you may need to accelerate your bike’s speed to get into a safe zone. But make sure to use your speed wisely as required to make space for yourself and those around you. Do not enter into blind spots of other vehicles while riding on the highway. Rather, use controlled acceleration to reserve a safe zone on the freeway.

Are You Wearing A Helmet That Needs Replacing?

posted Jan 7, 2018, 12:34 AM by Silvio Vincini   [ updated Jan 7, 2018, 12:43 AM ]

When To Replace Your Motorcycle Helmet

Ask yourself this question, will your helmet protect you if your motorcycle suddenly loses balance? Unsure? If so, now is the time to consider a new helmet.

Most of the helmet manufacturers recommend that helmet replacement is a good option for every 5 years for a safe ride. Even bike riding professionals say that every helmet has a good lifespan of 5 years and thereafter, it should be replaced with a later one even if it has been dropped once.

Motorcycle Safety Tips By Motorcycle Trainers In Perth: Why Replace Your Helmet From Time To Time?

Deterioration: Everything in this world deteriorates after a period of time and so do helmets. They are designed to protect your head from severe injuries when you face an accident, however, if you are wearing a helmet with worn out material that can’t protect you then what is the point of wearing it. Continuously wearing a helmet makes it less effective as it meets sweating and strong hair products regularly, which decline its condition. Due to this, you should replace your helmet after a recommended time period.

Change in Technology: Due to advancement in technology, new helmets are designed with better material and a better view of protection than the older ones you might be using. It is advised to do some research on the equipment you are going to buy with the help of ratings and reviews of newly introduced helmet technology. You should know whether it is good for you and if it will it fit your requirements.

Protecting your head is the priority: The primary role of a helmet is to protect your head from any harm so it should be manufactured with the material that is highly defensive in all conditions. Don’t just get attracted towards the latest helmet design, also get to know how secure is it, what the material is, its lifetime, and if it’s worth the cost.

How To Maintain a Good Helmet Condition For At Least Five Years?

To keep your helmet in good condition, you need to make sure that it’s stored properly in its bag when it’s not in use. Put it in a cool and dry place away from sun and dust. Avoid dropping your helmet and hang it properly on your bike. This will help retain its condition for a longer period.

Whether you are a regular bike rider or have just started your journey, wearing the right helmet is the most important safety aspect. If it has degraded in terms of safety then replace it with a later one with better technology and condition.

Tips For Riding Your Motorcycle In Hot Weather

Tips For Riding Your Motorcycle In Hot Weather (Motorcycle Techniques)

For those with a real passion when it comes to riding motorcycles, the weather is not a restriction as to whether it’s hot or cold. Motorcycle enthusiasts love to ride on those breathtaking highways, roads and turns that make their journey adventurous and memorable. However, riding in hot temperatures can be uncomfortable. In this blog post, we will share some motorcycle techniques that can be used to stay cool while riding in hot weather. These techniques are shared by professional motorcycle riders with years of experience.

motorcycle riding hot weather

  1. Sweating is good for the body: Do you know what happens when we sweat or why we sweat? The fact is that our body regulates its temperature by sweating. This sweat is basically evaporated water that comes out on the surface of the skin in hot weather after the body cools down. Our bodies use energy in the form of heat for the evaporation process and when the heat is released by our body, we become cool. Because of this, you should wear clothes that allow proper ventilation and protects you from the sun. You may experience this sweat while waiting at traffic lights but remember, you will be thankful as you will feel refreshed later.
  2. Keep your speed low in high heat: When the heat is very high, it is advisable to keep your motorcycle speed low, which is another motorcycle riding technique for hot weather.  When you ride fast in hot temperature, more heat will enter your body. To bring sweat you may need to wear more clothes. Yes, you may find it counterintuitive, but this is true. More clothes will lead to more sweat and thereafter, your body will feel cool through evaporation.
  3. Clothes to be preferred in hot weather: Professional motorcycle riders and even some bike riding trainers in Perth recommend wearing full sleeved, tight fitted shirts made of moisture-wicking fabric. Moisture-wicking fabric absorbs very little water and therefore, allows the sweat to be evaporated easily instead of absorbing it like cotton. This will help keep your body cool in hot temperatures and weather conditions.
  4. Stay hydrated: Most motorbike riders (hopefully) are aware of the importance to stay hydrated when riding, regardless of the weather. Everyone knows how much water is required by their body during high temperatures.  For this, carry a water bag on your back. Fill it with ice and water and get drinking. For those travelling long distances, make sure to carry extra water in your side case like gallon jug, insulated water bottles, for example. Another thing is to is to go for a regular urine test. If your body is dehydrated, you will enjoy your time while riding in hot weather. Deep-coloured urine and regular headaches are signs of dehydration. Water means water, try not to choose an alternative
  5. Avoid Tar Snakes: Tar snakes are a big threat to both vehicles and riders. These tar-like snakes can be found on the roads, used to fill the cracks and when the temperature is hot, this material becomes too slippery to be crossed upon. So, it is highly advisable for all bike riders to avoid them. To avoid slipping, cross them at an angle of 90 degrees in an upright position just like a railway track. If your front tyre begins sliding, try reducing your speed. Do not accelerate, stay in your lane, keep your head up and body steady and hold your grip lightly. You can also pull the clutch, ensuring that front wheel is clear and then re-engage the engine. This will protect you from slipping.

To conclude, dress properly, cover your skin, hydrate your body and avoid hazards. Wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen to avoid any sunburn.  Covering your body in hot temperatures will keep your body chilled. For any more suggestions, tips or bike riding lessons, contact us today!

How to Clean and Lube a Motorcycle Chain

posted Dec 21, 2017, 2:11 AM by Silvio Vincini   [ updated Dec 21, 2017, 2:40 AM ]

How do I Clean & Lube a Motorcycle Chain?

This process is extremely important in maintaining your motorcycle.

Here is a step by step guide explaining how to clean and lube your motorcycle chain.

  1. Know the type of motorcycle chain: Do you know what type of motorcycle chain you are dealing with? It is so important to understand the type of your chain before cleaning it as you will have to use different approach depending on the chain. If your chain is plain on metal links and shows no seal in between, then you will need to clean it more aggressively than a sealed chain. Sealed chains have a rubber seal between the inner and outer links to keep the grease in and the dirt out. If you know the type, you can choose the best approach.
  2. The motorbike should be in the correct position: Your bike must be kept on the stand to spin freely, whether it's on the centre stand or paddock stand. If your bike's wheels spin freely then you would be able to clean and lube your chain quickly and easily. You can also use your kickstand if you don’t have any of the above 2 stands.
    motorcycle chain
  3. Check the condition of the motorcycle's chain and sprockets: While cleaning your chain you will get more familiar with its current condition. Also, look at the sprocket. If it has a flat top and the edges are worn evenly, it means they are in a good condition. If your chain is flexible in moving back and forth and side to side equally with minimal variances then, your chain doesn't need to be replaced. When cleaning or lubing, examine the master link: The master link is the link that connects the two ends of the chain. For a master link to be secure, it should be peened over with rivets. In addition, the sprockets should also be healthy. When examining your chain, look out for the condition of your sprockets, and whether it has sharp fins and teeth. Your chain and riding style affects your sprockets and wears them down in different ways. If they have shark fins, it means the leading edge of the sprocket wears more than the back one and faster. On the other hand, sharp teeth denote both leading and trailing edges are heavily worn. So never put a new chain on an old or worn sprocket. Change both of them at the same time.
    motorcycle sprockets
  4. Use cleaner as a spray on the chain: Now you can start griming off and removing dirt from the chain. When doing this, you can choose professional chemicals or a kerosene to remove dirt and lubricant from the chain. Its advisable to soak the chain properly into kerosene as it would be cheaper than buying a new chain.
  5. Now begin chain scrubbing: After few hours of soaking, you can start cleaning the chain with a chain brush. Choose a brush that can clean three or four sides of the chain. We recommend you thoroughly clean the chain so its easy to lube.
    motorcycle lube
  6. Soak the chain again: Once you are done with cleaning the chain, you can re-soak it in any chemical of your choice.  Make sure, all the dirt has been removed properly.
  7. Dry the chain for better lubrication: For the chain to be lubed perfectly, you should dry it properly. So give it time to dry after removing all the chemical/cleaner from it. You can also use a cloth to wipe off all the cleaner.
  8. Begin lubing the chain: This is the last step of the process when lubricating your motorcycle chain. Bring the dried chain to the lubricant and apply it evenly on all sides of the chain. You can check out and find the best lubricant as there are plenty of lubricants available in the market. Use the lubricant that would not be easily flung off of the chain and disturb the other parts. Lubricate all the sides and sprockets of the chain properly. If you have a plain chain, you will need to lube it continuously from time to time so that it functions properly whereas a sealed chain needs to be lubricated only from the outside to protect it from rust.
Follow these 8 simple steps’ to maintain a healthy motorbike without wasting money. Be your own mechanic and get ready for your next ride!

How To Gear Up Your Passenger

posted Dec 20, 2017, 9:30 PM by Silvio Vincini   [ updated Dec 20, 2017, 10:47 PM ]

Motorcycle Safety: How To Gear Up Your Passenger

People usually say that the passenger on the back seat of the motorcycle does not need any protection and that only the rider needs to be careful and fully protected. However, as you probably already know, this is not true. If you are a rider, the passenger behind you trusts you enough to get on your motorcycle so you hold some responsibilities towards their protection. Passengers behind you may not be familiar with the safety requirements so it becomes your job to make them understand the safety procedures.

motorcycle riding passenger

Here Are Few Tips For Motorcycle Riders On How To Gear Up Their Passengers

  1. Talk To Your Passenger: You need to spend some time educating your passenger about gearing up and also making sure they are aware of the road risks. They may assume that they are safe by sitting at the back, but in fact, they are just as vulnerable as the rider. The roads will not distinguish between the rider and the passenger, it will hurt both but the one with the protection will be better off. Passengers may find it unnecessary to buy a gear suit as they go for the occasional ride, but it is actually very important.
  2. Help Your Passenger Find The Right Gear: Yes, it’s difficult and challenging to find a suitable fit for someone else. You may get confused when selecting between various brands and sizes. Passengers have to wear a comfortable gear suit otherwise their journey will be terrible and uncomfortable. Ideally, you want to shop online while sitting beside your passenger and asking them to select what their body type will fit. This is one of the important motorcycle safety tips.
  3. Size Should be Appropriate: Sizing is one of the most important aspects that you must know before buying a gear suit for your passenger. Get to know the size of their top, bottom and shoes. WIthout any information about size, you can’t find the right fit for your passenger.  If the fit is not right, they will not be properly protected.
  4. Loose or Tight Fit: Every person has a different choice of clothes. So, if you want your riding partner to wear this protective gear suit, then you should ask them in advance whether they would prefer a tight or loose fit to wear. Otherwise, you may waste your money.

So, when riding with passengers, you must ensure they gear up properly on a motorcycle before riding. This will not only protect them from injuries but also make it easy for you to ride comfortably as you know that both of you are under a protective layer. You can also help them in finding the right gear, provided you know their size.

Motorcycle Safety: Dealing With Distracted Drivers

posted Dec 19, 2017, 3:43 AM by Silvio Vincini   [ updated Dec 20, 2017, 8:25 PM ]

Motorcycle Safety Strategies For Dealing With Distracted Drivers

Riding a motorcycle is sometimes equally as difficult as it is fun. So, riders need to be extra careful and apply safe driving strategies to ensure that you and those around you are safe. In this blog post, we will discuss why you need to be aware of distracted drivers and how to deal with them.

Here are few signs of identifying distracted drivers when riding a motorcycle.

  1. Sudden slowing down in speed: You may find people on the road suddenly reduce their speed because their phone rings or beeps or chirps. You need to be careful of such drivers and notice them if they begin to slow down so you can be prepared.
  2. Turning without indicating: In some cases, drivers will turn without giving any signal because they are either busy texting or listening to music or lost and finding their way. This usually happens when drivers are new to an area and are trying to find their location. In such cases, keep a good distance between yourself and the car ahead of you in cases they forget to use their indicator.
  3. Remain stationary at a Green Light: Remaining stationary even in front of a green light? Yes, this does and can easily happen. The reason for this is that they are lost in their thought process or busy texting. This is another situation where you can prepare yourself and anticipate the driver’s actions.
  4. Unaware of surroundings: Sometimes, drivers will keep their head straight or slightly down, without taking note of their surroundings. These drivers often time no idea of their surrounding vehicles or motorcyclists. In this situation, you want to remain aware and keep your distance. If possible, try to get ahead of the vehicle and out of their surroundings.
motorcycle safety techniques

Above, we mentioned the different signs of a distracted driver. Now, let’s get into dealing with these problems. Here are a few motorcycle techniques for riders shared by expert motorcycle riding trainers in Perth.

  1. Learn how to apply brakes in traffic: Sometimes you may have to stop or apply brakes suddenly. This will depend on how quickly you react, which should always be safe for yourself and those around you. So, it is advisable to ride in a gear which lets you accelerate instantly to cover the jam. Your rpm should not remian low or else you could get stuck in the traffic.
  2. Alert drivers by flashing:  If you are applying brakes and reduce your speed, make it visible to others by brake flashing so that unaware or careless driver get notified through a visual warning. This is one of the most common motorcycle safety techniques.
  3. Use gestures occasionally: Sometimes your indication may not be seen by drivers around you. In this situation, you may need to use gestures to notify them. For example, use your left hand when you take a turn or change lanes. Dropping of left arm can be used when you are attempting to reduce your speed. These will help you remain visible and noticeable.
  4. Adopt both aggressive and defensive riding skills: You may need to be a bit aggressive while riding your bike as well as being defensive. At the end of the day, you need to protect yourself. You should be smart enough to pop a downshift and take over the careless driver on the freeway.

Learn to adopt the motorcycle safety skills mentioned above. However, it’s important to remember you cannot control drivers around you, you can only control yourself.

6 Tips On Buying A Used Motorcycle

posted Dec 17, 2017, 1:23 AM by Silvio Vincini   [ updated Dec 20, 2017, 8:24 PM ]

What To Look Out For When Buying a Used Motorcycle

Are you looking for a second hand used bike? It can be a daunting task in buying a second-hand bike, as you are not completely sure what you are getting. Before buying a second-hand bike, consider these key points shared by some experts in the field.

Do Thorough Research

Before buying any vehicle or machinery, it is always advisable to do some research. Machinery changes from time to time. You must know in advance about the model you are going to buy - how popular is it among consumers, its features, engine capacity, maintenance cost, model parts and more.

Research is key in the beginning stages, read discussions on forums, Facebook pages, motorcycle websites and blogs (like this one). You can also talk to expert motorcycle instructors in Perth and then buy a second-hand bike at a low price if possible.

motorcycle inspection

Carefully Consider Photographs

When someone posts an advertisement of a second-hand motorbike, you may easily get fooled by generic pictures that have just been used for the purpose of the advert. Quite often, you need to be careful as the posted pictures can be different from the original condition of the second-hand motorbike.

On the other hand, some pictures may show you the original condition of the bike like worn tyres, visible scratches on the panel etc. In both cases, ask for a price negotiation based on the cost of the repairs.

motorcycle tyres

Gather Some History Before the Actual Inspection

Before going to inspect the second-hand motorcycle directly, it is always advisable to read about its history- its demand in the market, its reviews, current cost and future cost if you happen to sell it.

Is the Engine Case Warm?

When you are negotiating with the second-hand bike seller, feel the engine cases of the motorcycle. If it is warm, then there may be some issues with the bike that the seller is hiding which is why they may have heated up the bike before showing it to you.

You can ask them directly and their paused response will convey if there is something wrong. Better, if you call them in advance to not start the bike before you arrive. This way you can see how much time it takes to start and if it creates a disturbing noise.

Look at the Condition

Now you must assess the condition of the bike. Put the bike on the centre stand to see if its straight and if the wheels are lined up. A straight bike shows that it has been driven less and has a good lifespan. If it does not have a centre stand, set the bike on the paddock stand and notice if the forks are parallel and whether the rear wheel is working properly.

In addition, check the condition of sprockets and if the chain has any strain. Motorcycle tyres are expensive, so it’s worth it to take as long as you need to assess the condition of the motorcycle's tyres before buying it. Sometimes, the tyres look new but they may not work as good as they look on the road.

motorcycle condition
Take a Ride

To check the actual condition of the bike, make sure you take the motorcycle for a proper test ride before buying it. This way you can find if there are any mechanical issues occurring with the tyres, speed, noise and brake response.

The suggestions mentioned in this post are just some of the aspects to look out for before buying a second-hand bike. It’s important to do your research and get as much feedback as you can.
